Excerpts From Remarks Made By Undersecretary of State Stuart Eizenstat and Peaceworks’ President Daniel Lubetzky

November, 1997

Undersecretary Eizenstat:

"I just finished a session where we talked about taking risks for peace, and I would like to say that this company, PeaceWorks, and its President, Daniel Lubetzky, perfectly embody what we were talking about. PeaceWorks is taking commercial risks for peace."

"It is in the business of marketing products that are jointly produced in the Middle East by Arabs and Israelis, and in the process it is helping to strengthen the economic sinews of peace–that growing web of private sector connections between people that may be separated by borders, but remain united in their vision for a new, prosperous and more peaceful Middle East."

"The beauty of it is that PeaceWorks is prospering…it is proving that you can make peace and make money at the same time."

"…I am particularly proud that PeaceWorks is an American firm, and I hope this will inspire others to emulate this example of creativity and hard-headed business sense."

Daniel Lubetzky:

"An American company, our first mission is to find the highest quality products that we can find and sell and make money. The second mission is a social mission: to use our economic force and strength to try and promote cooperation in the regions where we operate."

"…if people are interacting on a daily basis, then hopefully it will shatter cultural stereotypes. People will realize that is in their interest to work together and to humanize what formerly could have been an absolute enemy."

"…the more companies operate and profit together, the more they will gain a vested interest in preserving and cementing those bonds, [and] the more the region is prospering, the more people will have a state in preserving that stability, and hopefully some day, prosperity will make stability prevail."

"Our first venture was started three and a half years ago–an Israeli company that purchased raw materials from Palestinians and Arab-Israelis. The results have been very encouraging. As Undersecretary Eizenstat pointed out, we have grown tremendously on a business scale. We have grown from 30 stores to over 3,100 stores carrying our products to date. We have gone from one to fifty distributors, covering eight different market sectors, and the people that we work with have been able not only create relationships and learn to respect and tolerate one another, but actually to become friends–steadfast allies in spite of everything that is going on today."

"In spite of all the gloom that happens from time to time in the region and of the tragedy today, our trading partners continue to work together. This week we announced a new venture with a Palestinian chocolate manufacturer…the company currently employs 220 people in Ramallah, and it purchases some of its raw materials from Israeli companies."
